What the exam is
The ASCP Phlebotomy Technician exam is 80 questions in 2 hours, all multiple choice with one best answer. That is 90 seconds per question.
It is a computer adaptive test (CAT). Answer a question correctly and the next one is slightly harder; miss one and the next is slightly easier. Every question in the bank is calibrated for difficulty, and the weight of each question depends on that difficulty. To pass you must answer enough of the harder questions to score above the pass point, so two candidates with the same number of correct answers can get different results.
The content guideline lists six content areas, each with a percentage range rather than a fixed number: Circulatory System (5-10 %), Specimen Collection (45-50 %), Specimen Handling, Transport and Processing (15-20 %), Waived and Point-of-Care Testing (5-10 %), Non-Blood Specimens (5-10 %) and Laboratory Operations (15-20 %). Specimen Collection alone is close to half the exam.

How it is scored
Because the exam is adaptive, ASCP reports a scaled score and does not publish a percentage of correct answers needed to pass. There is no honest way for a practice app to promise you a pass mark on an adaptive exam.
This app therefore uses fixed-form practice tests: the same 80-question structure, with a fixed number of questions per area chosen inside the official ranges (5, 37, 13, 5, 5 and 15), and 70 % as a study target. Treat it as a measure of whether you know the material across all six areas, not as a prediction of your scaled score.
The guideline states that regulatory questions on the exam are based on U.S. sources such as AABB, FDA and CLIA, and that laboratory results and reference ranges are given in both conventional and SI units. This app's explanations follow the same rule.

What it costs to sit
The ASCP Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) sets and publishes the exam fee, and it is not stated in the outline documents this page is built from. Check the current fee with the certifying body before you apply.
The guideline was revised in September 2025
The content guideline in force carries the date September 25, 2025. Compared with the earlier version, the descriptions of the areas were reworded and expanded: specimen acceptability and add-on testing under Handling, instrument troubleshooting and quality control under Point-of-Care Testing, proficiency testing and competency assessment under Laboratory Operations.
The six areas and their ranges did not change. What changed is what ASCP spells out inside each area, and that is what this app's areas follow.

Keeping the credential
Passing is the start of a cycle, not the end of one. This is what the ASCP Board of Certification requires afterwards.
- The PBT credential is time-limited to three years. You keep it through the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) every three years.
- Nine points per cycle: 2 in phlebotomy, 1 in laboratory or patient safety, 1 in medical ethics and 5 in any related laboratory area.
- The continuing education has to be earned inside your current three-year cycle.
- CMP application fee $110; reinstatement of an expired credential $135 on top of it; $20 for a second or later certification with the same expiration date.
- Once expired you may no longer cite the credential after your name. You can reinstate through the CMP for up to ten years; past ten years you retake and pass the exam.

How to study for it
- Work in the proportions above. A practice test that pulls at random from a whole question bank hides your weak areas by burying them among the strong ones; one built with the published split shows you where the exam will actually hurt.
- Train at the pace of the real thing: this exam runs at about 90 seconds per question.
- Specimen Collection is up to half of the exam. If your time is short, it is the area where an hour of study buys the most.
- Study by area, not by volume. Finish one area, then measure it, then move on. A score of 90 % on eight questions is not mastery of anything.
- Read the explanation of the questions you got right, not only of the ones you missed. A lucky guess and a correct answer look identical on a score line.
